Fifth grader Owen Wilkerson from Fahari Jeffers Elementary in Chula Vista, California, is already showing the mindset and work ethic of a future standout quarterback. A member of the Class of 2033, Owen began playing football at age six and quickly developed a passion for the game. From the moment he first watched football, he knew he wanted to be the one leading the offense.

For Owen, being a quarterback means more than just throwing passes—it’s about leadership, intelligence, and responsibility. “QBs have to maintain a high football IQ,” he says. “You have to know what everyone is doing on every single play so that you can make adjustments quickly.” He enjoys guiding his team and helping the offense execute successfully.
Owen looks up to Patrick Mahomes, admiring his ability to think fast and extend plays under pressure. That same mindset drives Owen to keep improving his own decision-making and creativity on the field. His development is supported by both his dad and his QB coach, Coach Kyle. His dad focuses on agility and strength training, while Coach Kyle sharpens his fundamentals and throwing mechanics.

Off the field, Owen enjoys riding his e-bike daily and fishing whenever he can. But football remains his focus year-round. He’s attended several QB camps, with his favorite being QBIQ in Las Vegas, where he learned how to break down coverages and apply that knowledge in real game situations. He’s also looking forward to attending the QB Universe Camp in Dallas next year.
Owen’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. After breaking his middle finger on his throwing hand last offseason, he spent nearly three months in recovery. With determination and consistent rehab, he came back stronger—throwing farther than ever. He also overcame struggles with blocking by building stronger relationships with his offensive line and participating in their drills.
Before every game, Owen follows a consistent warm-up routine: he throws with his dad, then joins team drills, and finally takes a quiet moment to pray. That focus and preparation have helped him create big moments, including a memorable 65-yard touchdown run where he stiff-armed three defenders to seal a victory.

Owen’s approach to football emphasizes mastering the basics before chasing flashier skills. “Fundamental training is a must. You cannot skip this part,” he says. His goal for the upcoming season is clear—to learn even more, help his team reach the championship, and lead with confidence.
Owen Wilkerson will also be joining the 8th Annual SoCal QB Camp on December 20–21 in San Diego, California, furthering his development and continuing to sharpen his skills among other young quarterbacks.
Still early in his football journey, Owen stands out for his discipline, leadership, and love of the game—qualities that will continue to guide him both on and off the field.
